Philosophy
Welcome to Castlebrooke's Technology Learning Commons (TLC). The TLC allows for the creation of safe learning environments that facilitates collaborative or individual learning. The TLC is both the collaborative and social hub (before and after school) of Castlebrooke!
The TLC is comprised of four areas. The Instructional area, the Collaborative area, the Leisure Learning area and the Makerspace area. Every piece of furniture in the TLC is movable thus allowing for flexibility in the use of the space. This allows classes or individual users to design their own learning environments that works best for them.
Reliable and equitable access to technology is essential for learning today. Wireless technology is throughout the TLC. This connectivity allows students to sign-out laptops provided by the TLC and use them anywhere in the facility. Wireless technology also allows students to connect through (BYOD). Wireless access has been shown to have a positive impact on research skills and on students engagement and achievement. Wireless technology gives all students a voice to engage fully with their world.
Learning environments today include virtual spaces as well. Virtual spaces are almost as important as the physical space the TLC has in the school as it is accessible anywhere and anytime. To support this, the TLC has access for research purposes to the virtual TLC http://www.CastlebrookeTLC.ca. There, research can be pursued using numerous databases and e-books. Instruction on the use of these resources is provided in large class settings or individually by a teacher-librarian.
The TLC helps builds 21st Centruy Competencies in Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving, Collaboration, Learning to Learn, Communication, Innovation / Creativity and Global Citizenship.
